In the old century people felt the need to measure the time of day. Babylonian priests, who were well acquainted with astronomy, split the day into 12 hours, and each hour into 30 minutes. At night they measured time with the help of stars. Another Babylonian invention is the sun clock, invented in 640 B.C. Sometime later came the invention of sand clocks and water clocks, which were used even after the invention of the mechanical clock. Mechanical clocks were found in the Middle Ages and first appeared on clock towers. Clocks and timepieces that stroke on the hour were made starting the eleventh century. Table clocks appeared sometime later.
